The Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing’s Diversity Mentoring Program

 

The Diversity Mentoring program is a co-design program involving a collaboration between an aged care service and the Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing. The program links leaders from the aged care service to diversity mentors from the Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing in a six month mentoring relationship.

The aim of the program is to support the aged care leaders within the service to develop the initial stages of a diversity and inclusion approach across the whole organisation.

The program will involve monthly diversity mentoring consultations as well as two online training sessions on culturally appropriate care delivered to leaders and direct care staff.

The consultations aim to develop policies and resources to support the diverse needs of consumers who access the services. These policies many include a diversity and inclusion policy, staff survey to collect diversity data, advice around collecting diversity data about consumers and a care plan template to gather the cultural, spiritual and language needs of consumers.

The Diversity mentor will also guide staff involved in how to use the Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing’s key resources as well as other key resources relating to diversity, equity and inclusion in aged care. These are, but not limited to:

• The Inclusive Service Standards – online self-reflection portal and learning modules
• Diversity webinar series – free online conversations to support staff on supporting the diverse needs of culturally diverse consumers and where to go for additional resources
• Practice guides to support staff on a range of topics which promote culturally appropriate care
• Consumer Feedback forms in 20 languages
• Communication Cards in 68 languages
• Partners in Culturally Appropriate Care Alliance website and links to resources across the Alliance
• Department of Health key resources
• Other resources such as good practice examples from the aged care sector
