Improving service knowledge and access among older people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds with dementia
National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) will be working with Aged Care Assessment Teams to trial videoconferencing technology with interpreters for aged care assessments. The interpreter will be in a different location to the assessment worker, older person and family. This project will contribute to the health and wellbeing of older Australians from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds through improved assessment for aged care services and dementia.
It aims to improve service access among people from CALD backgrounds and address the issue of delayed diagnosis amongst this group. A more timely diagnosis of dementia will allow for early planning, access to services and medication. It will also address the issue of shortage of interpreters, especially in new and emerging languages and rural/remote areas. It is anticipated the use of e-interpreting will be more cost-effective than face-to-face.
